How To Prepare A House For Exterior Painting

It’s the season we have anticipated for months.. Spring! Now that Spring has arrived, have you thought about Spring cleaning yet? We know that it can be overwhelming, so how about we help you take some of the stress of your shoulders? It’s time to completely transform your home image! People often consider painting the inside of their home before they think about painting the outside. This is something that should be reconsidered, the outside of your home is exposed to harsher weather elements than the inside of your home and the exterior paint will wear, exposing your home to potential water damage and other issues. Once paint starts to chip off and deplete, not only will your house loose protection, but it will start to look worse and only worsen with time.
Let Handyman Painters Toronto coat your home with a new coat of paint, and avoid weather damage! If you need some guidance on how to prepare a house for exterior painting then read on!

1: Thoroughly Clean

• Before any exterior painting can be done, you will need to thoroughly clean the outside of your house with a pressure washer. A pressure washer helps you save time and money.
• Grab a wire brush or steel wool and begin to scrape at any loose debris and paint that may have been flaked off. Just be careful not to scrape it too hard or it will expose the deeper than the surface and you don’t want that.

2: Repair Any Minor Damage and Re-seal Where Necessary

• If repairs are needed, use a helpful substance called exterior repair compound and with sand paper, sand the surface smooth.
• If you find any existing caulking compound, get rid of the old and apply new caulking compound to the door, window trim and other areas.
• With a putty knife, use putty and fix imperfections.

3: Protect The Area

• Get a drop cloth or tarp and lay it over areas you want to protect from paint splashes. Flowerbeds, the driveway, lawn, porch decorations ETC. These are all areas you may want to cover up and protect.
Helpful Tips:

• If you use a pressure washer always make sure you set it to the appropriate strength for where you will be spraying. You don’t want to damage anything, and pressure washers are quite powerful.
• Remove any lawn decor or porch decorations and furniture if possible instead of covering it. This is so it does not get in your way and you can guarantee that these items won’t get ruined accidentally.
